The Birth of the Stud The Gornoeth Stud was started in 1953 when “Jack Cefngornoeth” paid a visit to the Derwen Stud and noticed a bold black 4 year old mare called Derwen Derwena. A deal was struck between Jack & Roscoe Lloyd, and Derwena returned to Llangadog shortly afterwards. Put to Pentre Eiddwen Comet and Brenin Y Bryniau amongst others, the offspring of these partnerships provided some tremendous foundation stock for the stud. One of these was Gornoeth Deri Sulwen (by Brenin y Bryniau) who stood to some of the most famous stallions of the 1960’s including Cahn Dafydd, Brenin Dafydd and Caradog Llwyd. Gornoeth Deri Sulwen Deri Sulwen was involved and directly responsible for probably the greatest Royal Welsh successes for the stud to date, namely placed in her own class, her foal won his class, another of her progeny, Gornoeth Cadog was second in the stallion class, and Gornoeth Derwena (by Derwen Rosinas Last) came second in her class all in the same year! Gornoeth Cadog Cadog (Nebo Black Magic x Gornoeth Deri Sulwen) had been sold as a yearling to Mr John Taylor of Huddersfield. Shortly before she died Mrs Taylor invited Rachel to pay a visit to Yorkshire too see some of Cadog’s offspring. Rachel was amazed at how sprightly the old mares looked & wished she had been able to meet Mr Taylor to congratulate him on the quality of his stock. Whilst visiting she also saw Taybog Byron (Gornoeth Cadog x Gwynau Rosina) and with the help of David Berry who had helped John Taylor with the horses for over twenty years, the old bloodline was returned to Gornoeth with Taybog Byron where he remained until he passed away in the early summer of 2007. Family influences Like “Jack Cefngornoeth”,Rachel’s other Grandfather, Trevor Rees - Ty Coch of Sennybridge, was also a keen horseman who continued to break in, school and hunt horses well into his seventies. Great friends long before Rachel’s parents met, Jack and he not only shared the same interests, but also the same birth date, and were also known to share the odd bottle of whiskey. Rachel has her own birth date but the love of horses has certainly filtered down to her. Regarding the whisky, you will have to ask her yourself! But you should know that one of her colts from 2006 was called Gornoeth Jack Daniels… The Dun Line Gornoeth Deri Sulwen when put to Caradog Llwyd started the successful Dun coloured line of the stud: The first dun mare being Gornoeth Rosie who produced Gornoeth Candy (by Nebo Black Magic) who topped the 1973 Llanarth Sale. Her full sister Gornoeth Cindy was the highest paid filly at the 1974 Llanarth Sale and was one of the foundation mares for the Trevallion Stud, before being sold on to Thorneyside and producing Thorneyside Cindy. Rachel was fortunate to recapture the bloodline with her current dun brood mare, Estoro Candyfloss who is out of Gornoeth Candy (by Estoro Mandate). The Black Line Gornoeth Deri Sulwen also produced Gornoeth Derwena who was the dam of Gornoeth Black Bess - dam of both Gornoeth’s current “black line” namely Gornoeth Dazzler & Gornoeth Greta (both by Nebo Black Magic). Greta, who was born the day after Jack passed away enjoyed some success in the show ring as a youngster, and has passed on winning genes to amongst others Gornoeth Well There You Are Then, who Rachel had great results with as a yearling & 2 year old, before selling him to Miss Helena Tucker who has qualified with him for the CHAPS Winter Championships in 2007. Gornoeth Well There You Are Then 2004 Colt 2005 – 3rd Royal Welsh Winter Fair 2006 – 1st Sunnybank Caerphilly 2nd Ponies UK Winter Championships 1st, Reserve Youngstock Champion & Champion Coldblood at the BSPA Winter Championships. Not to be outdone, Gornoeth Dazzler also produces show quality foals, including Gornoeth Dyma Hi, who won Reserve Champion at a local show as a foal. Horse rich but time poor, if Rachel can find the time to do it, Dyma Hi is surely capable of bringing home many more rosettes to Gornoeth Stud. The Chestnut Line Gornoeth Rhosyn, mother of Gornoeth Red Rosette, was one of the offspring produced by Gornoeth Sidan (by Ceredigion Tywysog). Sidan’s dam was Gornoeth Black Beauty (Nebo Black Magic x Deri Sulwen ) who it is said by some to have been one of the best mares produced by the stud, but was sadly lost to colic before she could make her showing debut. Amongst others Gornoeth Rhosyn has produced Gornoeth Duchess (by Tireve Tywysog Du) sold to Mr & Mrs David Matthews of Cookham Dean. She is also the mother of Gornoeth Trevor-Jack, yet another prize winner. |
