STUD NAMES There are literally thousands of stud names, many of them no longer in use and they can be chosen for a variety of reasons. Often to do with place names, such as Cnwch or Llanarth, they can also be named after a farm, like Gornoeth (Cefn Gornoeth Farm) or a feature on the farm. (Twynmelyn is a rocky hillock on Delme's Farm). I'm not telling you how Tireve got it's name - you'll have to work it out for yourself - It only took me 3 years to click! Any WPCS member can register a prefix (currently costs £70), but finding one that isn't already in use can be quite tricky. There is a list of the prefixes at www.welshies.co.uk HORSE NAMES Equally difficult to find words that haven't been used as a prefix already, the second part of the horse's name can be anything you like provided it doesn't offend (I presume) I don't think you would get away with calling your horse Sambo if you lived in Haringey, but there probably aren't too many cobs trotting around Wood Green (however nice that sounds!) Still there is or was a Geler Sambo close to the WPCS Headquarters in Aberystwyth. There have been plenty of Comets and Flyers denoting the fine driving heritage of the breed. Often a foal's name is a progression of the Sire's, ie lots of the progeny of Derwen Royal Express kept the Royal Express with the new prefix. This could be why there are lots of Jack Daniels around, or there might be lots of breeders with a penchant for strong spirits. Many horses take a regular welsh name such as Daniel, Sion or Megan. And there are quite a few very odd ones such as Scooby Do & Looby Loo. Or how about having a horse called Raci Snatch, a gelding that is currently competing in the south of England? WELSH TO ENGLISH TRANSLATION As many of the famous Welsh Cobs have welsh words in their names, I thought it might prove useful to some site visitors if I provided a little bit of a dictionary for the most commonly used ones. In Welsh the noun comes first followed by the adjective, i.e Aderyn Du (Bird Black) not Du Aderyn (Black Bird) but sometimes the order has been done differently by the owner. Let me know if there are any others you would like to see translated. (This is something I'll be coming back to finish once I've got the photos sorted.)
